The electronic passport control system failed at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport: all 78 e-gates stopped working at around six in the morning. Border staff switched to manual document checks, and long queues formed.
The situation is made worse by a large number of passengers — schools in the Netherlands are on holiday. KLM reports delays of about 30 minutes and warns that a prolonged outage could create capacity problems at the airport.
Arrivals are not affected so far. Passengers are advised to arrive early and check their flight status.
